Job Description Overview- Senior Underwriter

Subject to a letter of authority that lists the scope of his/her authority, the Senior Underwriter is an
individual who is primarily responsible for assisting in the accomplishment of the Mission of the
Company and the Vision and Goals of the Underwriting Department. This is accomplished by
developing, growing, and maintaining a profitable book of public entity business through
determining the quality of a risk, setting the program structure, establishing policy terms and
conditions, and pricing our most complex commercial insurance accounts.
This work includes:
• Participate in the underwriting process by the accumulation, organization and analysis of
information from various sources including insurance applications, surveys, schedules or
statements, the Internet and other public and proprietary data sources;
• Collaborate with Risk Management and Marketing in the evaluation or assessment the public
entity business using tools available;
• Utilize underwriting support tools to develop appropriate pricing for each exposure including
experience, schedule, deductible and other rate modifications;
• Creating/presenting the proposal to the broker/insured and successfully negotiating binding of
targeted business;
• Assist in the development of new production sources and build new relationships with key
brokers and insureds;
• Build and manage existing Broker/Insured Relationships providing high level service by being
responsive and focused on supporting Brokers/Insured objectives through successful
• Assist in the training and mentoring of Underwriter Trainees and less experienced underwriting
staff members providing feedback and support to Underwriting Management;
• Participate or lead the development of underwriting guidelines, training materials and other
resources to support and enhance writing profitable business;
• Complete file reviews on Underwriting Trainees to insure quality and consistency of our
underwriting policies;
• Maintain an acute awareness of competition in the marketplace and communicate to
management industry trends and other market intelligence;
• Participate in the development and implementation of joint Marketing and Underwriting
strategies and initiatives;
• Involved in a broad spectrum of executive support activities and may be directly assigned
discretionary tasks and special projects in which independent judgment is expected and
• Proficiently use basic application software including spreadsheets, word processing documents,
e-mail, and database software necessary for the functions of the position as prescribed by
