Assistant Vice President – Accounting
The Assistant Vice President – Accounting serves as the Chief Accounting Officer for seven affiliated corporations, including:
• Two regulated, rated property and casualty insurance companies
• Two regulated insurance company management firms
• Three business corporations
Principal Responsibilities
• Manage the accounting function for all affiliated corporations, including direct supervision of four team members
• Maintain responsibility for compliance with applicable financial accounting standards and regulatory accounting requirements
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual internal financial statements
• Prepare regulatory and rating agency filings for the insurance companies and management companies
• Serve as the primary representative with external auditors and Department of Insurance examiners
• Represent the Accounting function to the Board of Directors
• Serve as the primary accounting liaison to the Board Audit Committee
• Participate as a key member of the Reserve Committee, including oversight of actuarial reserves for IBNR and development
• Participate as a key member of the Claims Committee, reviewing and authorizing claim reserves that exceed Claims Department authority
• Collaborate with the Treasurer and external tax professionals in the preparation of tax returns
• Maintain primary responsibility for internal financial controls and participate on the Internal Control Committee
• Partner with other department leaders to represent the interests of the accounting function throughout the organization
• Collaborate with the Treasurer on banking and short term investment activities
• Develop analytics based on financial information
• Represent Accounting in meetings with regulatory agencies
Position Details
Reports to: President, with oversight and mentoring from the Executive Vice President
Direct Reports: Four, including one accounting professional and three experienced accounting staff members
Compensation: Commensurate with experience, with future compensation aligned with full and independent assumption of Chief Accounting Officer responsibilities
Benefits: Commensurate with officer level status
How the Position Functions
The Executive Vice President provides oversight, mentoring, guidance, and training for the functions performed by this position. This includes financial reporting, regulatory filings, audit and examination matters, internal controls, committee responsibilities, and guidance regarding the unique accounting requirements of property and casualty insurance operations.
Qualified candidates should be credentialed and experienced accounting professionals with insurance accounting and regulatory compliance experience. The successful candidate will join an experienced team, with responsibilities expanding over time toward full independence in the Chief Accounting Officer role
