Position Summary

This role is responsible for underwriting commercial new and renewal business through an assigned group of agency partners. The Underwriter or Senior Underwriter evaluates submissions, determines appetite and pricing, manages exposure changes during the policy term, and supports profitable growth through strong agency relationships and field activity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, accept, decline, or modify new business and renewal submissions within underwriting authority and guidelines

  • Quote, negotiate, and bind coverage while applying knowledge of ISO forms, company and NCCI forms, endorsements, and commercial reference materials (including Best’s Underwriting Guide)

  • Monitor and respond to exposure changes throughout the policy period, including operational and financial changes

  • Manage a defined agency portfolio by developing relationships, conducting agency visits and reviews, supporting agency growth, and maximizing profit sharing opportunities and credit management practices

  • Prospect for and evaluate potential agency partners, including appointment decisions and agency performance management

  • Drive new business production and renewal retention through presentations and consultative engagement with agency and customer audiences

  • Manage territory performance with a focus on profitable underwriting results, service standards, and sales development

  • Build, track, and achieve business plans and production goals, including premium, profitability, and loss ratio targets, forecasting, and pipeline activity

  • Coordinate and promote claims, risk control, and premium audit services for current and prospective customers

  • Maintain awareness of corporate, regulatory, and competitive changes affecting lines of business written

  • Complete additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Field underwriting experience required within construction, oil and gas, or forest products

  • Strong commercial lines knowledge, including policy forms, coverages, and pricing for new and renewal business

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze exposures, identify risk trends, and implement action plans during the policy term

  • Experience managing agency relationships, including growth and development responsibilities

  • Proven ability to support external sales activity, including presenting to agencies and customers and driving retention

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle report
